Frequently Asked Questions

What is Expected Goals (xG) and how is it calculated?
Expected Goals (xG) is a statistical measure in football that assesses the quality of shooting chances and predicts how many goals a team or player should have scored based on their chances. It takes into account various factors such as shot location, angle to goal, type of shot, and more. Each shot is assigned a probability value between 0 and 1, representing how likely it is to result in a goal.
How useful is xG?
Football is a low scoring sport, so on match level it gives a rough estimate of the quality of the created chances. The real use comes at season level though. Over- or underperforming teams will show up and gives us a good estimate about their real strength. The easiest gains are made when looking at trends. xG going down over multiple matches can be a good indicator that the team is in a bad form or there are some real problems.
How often is the data updated?
The data is updated after each matchday, typically within 24 hours of the matches being completed. It depends on my own schedule and availability how quick I can update the data.
What is xThreat and how does it differ from xG?
Expected Threat (xT) is a metric that evaluates all on-ball actions, not just shots. While xG only measures the quality of shooting chances, xT considers how each action (passes, dribbles, carries) increases or decreases the likelihood of scoring. This provides a more complete picture of a player's offensive contribution, especially for players who may not take many shots but are crucial in building attacks. For now, only xT from passes is taken into account.
A lot of players have more minutes than on other sites, what's the deal with that?
I've chosen to show the minutes for every player including injury time. So playing the whole game is 90 minutes on other sites, but 90 + injury time on mine.
Getting blue fingers?
People from Zwolle are called "Blauwvingers" which translates to bluefingers. As I am from Zwolle, needed a unique site name and thought the link between coding a lot and getting blue fingers because of it and the nickname for Zwollenaren, I thought this was a fun name for my site.
I have another question
Feel free to send me a DM on Linkedin, Twitter or Bluesky. I'm always happy to help with questions regarding stats, programming or something else. This site is my first real project with HTML, CSS etc. For my plots and calculations I normally use R and Python.
